Two-time Academy Award-winning actress Dame Elizabeth Taylor passed away today. While many in our generation know Taylor for her eccentricities, many marriages and White Diamonds perfume, she also made some great films. Her stirring performance as Martha in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) with co-star (and husband #5 & 6 ) Richard Burton, is one of my favorite Taylor roles. This performance won Dame Elizabeth her second Academy Award for Best Actress; her first was for the film Butterfield 8 (1960). Some of Taylor’s other great films include National Velvet (1944), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), and A Place In the Sun (1951).
One of our favorite TV shows, Parks and Recreation, released a redesigned Casablanca movie poster for their PaleyFest2011 appearance today. I enjoy any cultural reference to old Hollywood films, but maybe this will also inspire other fans of the show who haven’t yet seen Casablanca to check out this amazing movie. In one of our first blog posts, we named Casablanca one of the six films to get you started if you aren’t already a classic film fan.
